SUMMARY:JESUS THE CHRIST IN THE 21ST CENTURY
DESCRIPTION:JESUS THE CHRIST IN THE 21ST CENTURY 2012 Lecture Series - October 19-21 Speaker - Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault Jesus the Christ In The 21st Century is a continuing series of lectures and discussions sponsored by Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte. It offers the Charlotte community access to the best of contemporary Jesus scholars in the hope of stimulating the exchange of ideas and deeper awareness. These scholars reach beneath Christian creed and dogma to the real person who inspired them: Jesus of Nazareth. Each visiting scholar brings a different viewpoint\, a new approach. They help us see Jesus as a person directly involved in and concerned about the world and its people\, in how we treat each other politically\, economically and socially\, and in how we understand ourselves. Jesus was a subversive in his own time and surely would be today. Studying his life opens a new way to apply theology directly to life. From this work\, a new awareness can emerge: a living creed for the 21st century. MPBC was honored to present our 2011 Jesus Christ in the 21st Century guest lecturer\, Dr. Roger Haight\, Scholar-in-Residence at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. The series was entitled "Jesus for Seekers." The 2011 lecture series will took place Friday\, October 7 - Sunday\, October 9\, 2011. Our 2012 guest lecturer will be The Reverend Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault. Previous speakers in this series include: Dr. Stanley Hauerwas\, Marcus Borg\, John Dominic Crossan\, Walter Wink\, William Herzog\, N. T. Wright\, Amy-Jill Levine\, Georg Retzlaff\, Stephen Patterson\, Elaine Pagels\, Dr. Sandra Schneiders\, Bishop John Spong and Reverend Dr. Serene Jones.

SUMMARY:Kay Falk Literary Group celebrates and reads from <i> Night Bloom </i> by Virginia Redfield
DESCRIPTION:Please join the All Souls Cathedral Book Group on Thursday evening\, May 24th\, at the Cathedral of All Souls\, Asheville\, to
celebrate the publication of Virginia Redfield’s beautiful new memoir\, Night Bloom. The event will take place 7 p.m. in the Cathedral’s Warner Building. For those of you unfamiliar with Redfield and/or Night Bloom\, following is a description co-crafted by Virginia and author and teacher Kevin "Mc" Mcilvoy: “Night Bloom is a memoir that presents the coming-of-age story of
Virginia Redfield\, 88 years old. She gives an unforgettable account of her
own struggles against the fundamentalist faith of her mother\, and her own
victory through "the words of great writers who helped me free myself
from bondage." She explains\, "I wrote this memoir for my self. I needed
to see clearly where I had come from\, where I stand now. I trust and hope
that some readers may recognize certain twists in the path of my life and
respond: ‘Oh\, I know how that feels!’” For more information about Night Bloom\, visit the website: http://www.virginiaredfield.com/ To own as a Kindle eBook\,
click here to purchase on amazon.com Or click here to "like" on Facebook [caption id="attachment_2507" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Virgina Redfield"][/caption] Virgina Redfield I grew up in Miami\, Florida eighty-eight years ago. Even in my earliest memories\, I struggled against the killing literalism of my mother's fundamentalist faith. The path out of that foundational struggle was not easy\, but it was necessary. Night Bloom is an attempt to describe the conflict. Words—the words of great writers\, of caring professors (University of Miami\, George Peabody College\, Columbia University)—helped me free myself from bondage. I have had the great privilege to study with Lionel Trilling\, Mark VanDoren\, Marjorie Hope Nicolson\, James Mullenberg\, Reinhold Niebuhr\, and Paul Tillich. I wrote this memoir for my self. I needed to see clearly where I had come from\, where I stand now. I trust and hope that some readers may recognize certain twists in the path of my life and respond: "Oh\, I know how that feels!" "Written with clear-sight\, and from a clear heart\, Night Bloom\," to quote a reviewer
at amazon\, "tells a lively story that “takes us into the heart of a girl struggling\, and succeeding\, in becoming her own person.” Please join us on May 24th in friendship to
this marvelous book\, and to this marvelous woman—and writer. The first festival took place in June 2011; the next one is June 21-24 2012. We take inspiration from many places\, such as Greenbelt\, Burning Man\, the Iona Community\, SXSW\, and others. The festival is open to everyone; we don’t censor what can be said; we invite respectful - but fearless - conversation and action for the common good. Why Wild Goose? The Wild Goose is a Celtic spirituality metaphor that evokes unpredictability\, beauty\, and grace. The festival resonates with this image because we recognize that in the current climate of religious and political division and lack of civility\, embracing the creative and open nature of our faith is perhaps our greatest asset for re-building and strengthening our relationships with each other\, with our enemies\, with our stories\, our questions\, and the other. In that spirit\, in an informal setting\, and in the context of creative and respectful relationships\, we invite you to imagine a new world with us. SUMMARY:Contemplative Wisdom School with Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault
DESCRIPTION:The Wisdom School is now full. If you would like to be placed on a waiting list\, please fill out the registration form (link below) and mail so we can place you on the list. Dates*: October 14-19\, 2012; March 10-15\, 2013 (*Please note that these two weeks are part of the same Wisdom School) Cost: $1\,200* for both weeks (see below for more details) Place: Valle Crucis Conference Center Wisdom Schools have two purposes. The first is to make available to Christians the breadth and depth of their own Christian heritage\, paying particular attention to new resources and insights that come to us from the Near East and our own Western mystical tradition. In a growing network of North American Wisdom Schools\, we have delved deeply into Thomas Merton\, Jacob Boehme\, The Gospel of Thomas and Gospel of Mary Magdalene\, Meditations on the Tarot\, and The Cloud of Unknowing. We have also explored modern classics such as Jacques Lusseryran’s And There was Light and Jim Marion’s Putting on the Mind of Christ. A core textbook has been The Roots of Christian Mysticism by Olivier Clement. Our goal has been to recover the true catholicity of the Christian tradition by returning to our own wellsprings. The wider tradition is unanimous\, however\, in its assertion that the deeper Christianity cannot be known by the mind alone; it requires a transformation of the entire being. That is our second—and in fact\, primary—purpose. From time immemorial there have been wisdom schools to raise human consciousness and transform society\, and we work with the core practices that sustain the transformation of consciousness: meditation\, contemplative prayer\, lectio divina\, the language of sacred gesture\, and the daily practices of mindfulness\, inner observation and surrender. For Frequently Asked Questions concerning the Wisdom School check out this link hereWisdom School FAQ Requirements in order to be considered for the Wisdom School: 1) an established Centering Prayer practice 2) an ability to participate in both seminars Required Texts: Bourgeault\, Cynthia\, The Wisdom Way of Knowing Bourgeault\, Cynthia\, The Meaning of Mary Magdalene: Discovering the Woman at the Heart of Christianity Bauman\, Lynn\, ed. SUMMARY:Book Celebration, Reading, and Signing for <i> Night Bloom </i> by Virginia Redfield
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Thursday evening\, May 10th\, at the Cathedral of All Souls\, Asheville\, to
celebrate the publication of Virginia Redfield’s beautiful new memoir\, Night Bloom.
The evening will include readings from the book\, both by Redfield herself and other
Asheville writers; a book signing; and refreshments. The event will take place 7 p.m. in the Cathedral’s Parish Hall—the large
building to the left of church.
I trust and hope
that some readers may recognize certain twists in the path of my life and
respond: ‘Oh\, I know how that feels!’” For more information about Night Bloom\, visit the website: http://www.virginiaredfield.com/ To own as a Kindle eBook\,
click here to purchase on amazon.com Or click here to "like" on Facebook [caption id="attachment_2507" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Virgina Redfield"][/caption] "Written with clear-sight\, and from a clear heart\, Night Bloom\," to quote a reviewer
at amazon\, "tells a lively story that “takes us into the heart of a girl struggling\, and succeeding\, in becoming her own person.” Please join us on May 10th in friendship to
this marvelous book\, and to this marvelous woman—and writer. In this unflinching look at her early life\, Redfield has somehow turned her mother's oppressive Christian fundamentalism on its head and given us a true miracle of a book."   —Tommy Hays\, author of The Pleasure Was Mine &nbsp; photos and book cover design by Alissa Whelan

SUMMARY:CLOTHED WITH THE SUN: Writing Autobiography as Spiritual Journey
DESCRIPTION: Revelation 12 offers us the image of a woman of power\, ready to give birth\, with a story to tell. This woman "clothed with the sun" goes off to the wilderness for a time to rest and reflect. In this retreat\, participants will share such a "time apart\," to discern what stories are waiting to be born. We will keep a daily rhythm of times for reflection\, writing\, and sharing\, and for connecting our personal stories with the larger story of faith. No writing experience is required. All that is needed is a willingness to mine the richness of your own life and spirit\, and to offer it as a gift to others. The retreat will begin with dinner at 6:30 on Friday evening and will conclude with lunch on Sunday. The retreat fee ($325 for single occupancy\, $235 for double occupancy\, $125 for commuters) includes lodging\, all meals and snacks\, and programming. SUMMARY:The Enneagram: Exploring Ego & Awareness
DESCRIPTION:The Enneagram: Exploring Ego &amp; Awareness Using Panel Interviews &amp; Somatic exercises Workshop Facilitators Sandra will present material on the ego structures of the nine Enneagram types and the three centers of intelligence. Ruth will offer exercises and tools to deepen our “felt sense” of self [caption id="attachment_2391" align="alignright" width="211" caption="Sandra Smith"][/caption] “It’s not what we do but how we see.” Sandra Smith\, M.Div.\, teaches the Enneagram throughout the southeast as a tool for personal\, professional and spiritual growth. She uses the Enneagram as a map in staff communication and managerial styles for businesses\, non-profit organizations\, and faith communities. Sandra facilitates type and study groups\, and offers individual sessions as an Enneagram consultant and spiritual companion. Ruth Hill\, a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist\, Associate Polarity Practitioner and LMBT (NC1469)\, has been in private practice in Asheville for 18 years. Working with the premise of “radical inclusion” and the belief that being who you are can only arise from the love of being where you are\, Ruth will offer tools and exercises to deepen our “felt sense” of self. The Enneagram (“ennea” is Greek for nine) is a system for understanding “how we see” and where we focus our attention. Because energy follows attention\, this information is key to waking up to our lives. The Enneagram defines nine distinct personality types\, offering insight into the motivations behind our perceptions and actions. This insight opens us to alternate ways of being present with ourselves\, others\, and with the events of our lives. This system can be a powerful tool for personal\, spiritual and professional development as we learn ways to “un-stick” ourselves from fixed and limiting patterns. Bringing awareness to our patterns reorders the energy and allows us to suspend established ways of seeing the world. During this workshop\, participants will learn: • attentional patterns and world views of the nine types • gifts and strengths of each personality type • a felt sense of each type through an energetic awareness • strategies for living mindfully [caption id="attachment_2390" align="alignleft" width="186" caption="Ruth Hill"][/caption] Those new to the Enneagram will gain insights into the workings of their ego\, what drives their behavior\, and internal stories that shape perceptions. Those who know the Enneagram will learn more of its complexities and the felt sense of type. This workshop will be of particular interest to therapists\, coaches\, spiritual directors and those who manage others\, work closely with others\, or want to grow in their intimate relationships. Register by March 19 and the cost of $130 includes workshop materials\, snacks and Saturday lunch. After March 20\, cost is $145. Checks made payable to AlchemyWorks and mail to PO Box 1419\, Skyland\, NC 28776. www.AlchemyWorksEvents.com For more info or to register\, call 828-684-2339 or email sandraCsmith@charter.net. SUMMARY:Enneagram Practices that Support the Opening of the Heart
DESCRIPTION:With Sandra Smith\, M. Div. Certified Enneagram Consultant &nbsp; “What is the greatest obstacle to your deepest prayer?” How do you consistently block yourself  from living and loving fully? We have a plethora of material on spiritual practices from centering prayer to meditation\, to walking the labyrinth to breath practices. However\, when we add personality type into the mix\, we discover that some practices work to continue our “automatic mode” while other practices help us wake up. This workshop will explore specific practices for the nine Enneagram types that help loosen the grip of our ego structure so we live more fully who God created us to be. Sandra Smith is a certified Enneagram teacher in the Palmer/Daniels Narrative Tradition and is on the faculty of the East Coast Enneagram Intensive training program. She has an M.Div from Candler School of Theology\, Emory University. She makes her home in Asheville. Includes lunch.

SUMMARY:Teresa of Avila: Reformer, Contemplative, Free Spirit
DESCRIPTION:with The Rt. Rev. G. Porter Taylor Some of us have a firm direction for our lives. A few of us have a firm direction for our world\, but a very few are able to incarnate the vision that God gives them for their lives and the world. Teresa of Avila is such a person. A mystic\, a poet\, a reformer of the Carmelite tradition\, she is one on the two women named by the Roman Catholic Church as "Doctor of the Church." Teresa reformed the Carmelites and established 14 convents over all of Spain by personally walking through that vast country. She wrote numerous books about the mystical path and had as her confessor\, St. John of the Cross. Teresa has much to teach us in our time about perseverance in the face of hardship as well as aligning one's will with the divine will. She is a saint of courage and a fierce lover of Christ. The program will include a biographical presentation as well as an exploration of her particular spirituality. One of her poems gives a taste of her wisdom. Let nothing disturb you\, Let nothing frighten you\, All things pass away; God never changes. Patience obtains all things. He who has God Finds he lacks nothing; God alone suffices.

SUMMARY:A Day with Bishop Porter Taylor: The Post-Institutional Era and Prayer
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_2182" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="St. Mary of the Hills\, Blowing Rock"][/caption] Sponsored by CSR Join us in beautiful Blowing Rock for a day with Bishop Porter Taylor. The topic of the day: The Post-Institutional Era and Prayer. It is said that every 500 years the Church has a gigantic rummage sale as happened in the Reformation. We are in such a time\, and\, therefore must ask the Holy Spirit for the wisdom to know what to embrace and relinquish. Turbulent times as ours call for this gift of discernment. In times when towers fall and institutions crumble\, what is that faithful Christians are to hold onto with dear life and what must we let go? What are our nonnegotiable essentials that we have to retain lest we lose our core identity and what are not at the center of our identity and can be released? Times of change are opportunities for us to rediscover who we are. This Day with the Bishop will explore these questions and touch on the changes in the culture as well as some indications of faithful responses that will include prayer\, liturgy\, and church structure. The day will offer a morning lecture\, lunch\, early afternoon small group conversation and reflection\, and then Bishop Taylor will synthesize the day. For questions\, contact Robbin Whittington\, Director of CSR\, at 828-274-2681\, or robbin@allsoulscathedral.org To register\, click here to download the Registration Form. The study will take place on Tuesday\, November 29; Monday\, December 5;  and Tuesday\, December 13\, from 11:30 until 1:00 pm at St John’s Episcopal Church\, 290 Old Haw Creek Road\, Asheville. Please bring a lunch\, beverages provided. Because of a severe allergy\, please make certain your lunch is completely free of onions or any onion product. Thank you. Phone 298-3553 to register and to reserve a copy of the text: The Gospel of Mary Magdalene by Jean-Ives Leloup. [caption id="attachment_2009" align="alignleft" width="183" caption="Jean-Ives Leloup"][/caption] The cost of the text is $13.50\, discounted by the generosity of Accent on Books. Then Mary arose\, embraced them all\, and began to speak to her brothers: He is calling upon us to become fully human. —From The Gospel of Mary Magdalene
