Kay Falk Literary Group celebrates and reads from Night Bloom by Virginia Redfield

Please join the All Souls Cathedral Book Group on Thursday evening, May 24th, at the Cathedral of All Souls, Asheville, to
celebrate the publication of Virginia Redfield’s beautiful new memoir, Night Bloom.

The event will take place 7 p.m. in the Cathedral’s Warner Building.

For those of you unfamiliar with Redfield and/or Night Bloom, following is a description co-crafted by Virginia and author and teacher Kevin “Mc” Mcilvoy: “Night Bloom is a memoir that presents the coming-of-age story of
Virginia Redfield, 88 years old. She gives an unforgettable account of her
own struggles against the fundamentalist faith of her mother, and her own
victory through “the words of great writers who helped me free myself
from bondage.” She explains, “I wrote this memoir for my self. I needed
to see clearly where I had come from, where I stand now. I trust and hope
that some readers may recognize certain twists in the path of my life and
respond: ‘Oh, I know how that feels!’”

Virgina Redfield

Virgina Redfield

I grew up in Miami, Florida eighty-eight years ago. Even in my earliest memories, I struggled against the killing literalism of my mother’s fundamentalist faith. The path out of that foundational struggle was not easy, but it was necessary. Night Bloom is an attempt to describe the conflict.

Words—the words of great writers, of caring professors (University of Miami, George Peabody College, Columbia University)—helped me free myself from bondage. I have had the great privilege to study with Lionel Trilling, Mark VanDoren, Marjorie Hope Nicolson, James Mullenberg, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Paul Tillich.

I wrote this memoir for my self. I needed to see clearly where I had come from, where I stand now. I trust and hope that some readers may recognize certain twists in the path of my life and respond: “Oh, I know how that feels!”

“Written with clear-sight, and from a clear heart, Night Bloom,” to quote a reviewer
at amazon, “tells a lively story that “takes us into the heart of a girl struggling, and succeeding, in becoming her own person.”

Please join us on May 24th in friendship to

Wild Goose Festival

What is the Wild Goose Festival?

We are a community creating a festival at the intersection of justice, spirituality and art. The first festival took place in June 2011; the next one is June 21-24 2012. We take inspiration from many places, such as Greenbelt, Burning Man, the Iona Community, SXSW, and others. The festival is open to everyone; we don’t censor what can be said; we invite respectful – but fearless – conversation and action for the common good.

Why Wild Goose?

The Wild Goose is a Celtic spirituality metaphor that evokes unpredictability, beauty, and grace. The festival resonates with this image because we recognize that in the current climate of religious and political division and lack of civility, embracing the creative and open nature of our faith is perhaps our greatest asset for re-building and strengthening our relationships with each other, with our enemies, with our stories, our questions, and the other. In that spirit, in an informal setting, and in the context of creative and respectful relationships, we invite you to imagine a new world with us.

End: June 24, 2012

Place: Valle Crucis Conference Center

Wisdom Schools have two purposes. The first is to make available to Christians the breadth and depth of their own Christian heritage, paying particular attention to new resources and insights that come to us from the Near East and our own Western mystical tradition. In a growing network of North American Wisdom Schools, we have delved deeply into Thomas Merton, Jacob Boehme, The Gospel of Thomas and Gospel of Mary Magdalene, Meditations on the Tarot, and The Cloud of Unknowing. We have also explored modern classics such as Jacques Lusseryran’s And There was Light and Jim Marion’s Putting on the Mind of Christ. A core textbook has been The Roots of Christian Mysticism by Olivier Clement.

Our goal has been to recover the true catholicity of the Christian tradition by returning to our own wellsprings. The wider tradition is unanimous, however, in its assertion that the deeper Christianity cannot be known by the mind alone; it requires a transformation of the entire being. That is our second—and in fact, primary—purpose. From time immemorial there have been wisdom schools to raise human consciousness and transform society, and we work with the core practices that sustain the transformation of consciousness: meditation, contemplative prayer, lectio divina, the language of sacred gesture, and the daily practices of mindfulness, inner observation and surrender.
