It’s that elusive residue that we are here to discover, and to help one another discover.” —Archbishop Rowan Williams

The gift of living in turbulent times is that they force us to recognize what we must embrace and what we can release. Our present economic whirlwind compels us to discern the essentials of our callings even as we let go of all that is not necessary. In some ways, it’s as if our world is on fire and we must grab only that which we can carry into our new lives.

This dynamic is not only true for our economic lives but also for our Church. It is clear that the models of Church that worked in the 20th Century will not sustain us into this new future. Our questions, therefore, are what must we carry with us; what must we release; and, most importantly, what does discipleship look like in the second decade of this Century?

Because we cannot know where to go unless we know where we are, this program day will begin with portrayal of current cultural landscape and then move toward discussions of our true vocation as a Church.

The day will offer a morning lecture, lunch, early afternoon small group conversation and reflection, and then Bishop Taylor will synthesize the day.

Vocation, from the Latin vocare, verb, “to call.” Called to what we might ask? In the spiritual journey it leads to the answering of the question, “For what purpose was I born?” And that is the question every one of us will spend our entire lives answering.

Join us as Sam Portaro introduces a fresh perspective on vocation and guides us more deeply into the lifelong journey of discernment in our vocations—listening for and honoring where and to what God is calling us. In love, in work, in relationship. As children, students, newly married, new parents, caregivers, empty-nesters, in career crisis, retirement, through illness, special needs, and in dying. Every stage in life offers blessed opportunities to be all that we were created to be. Conversation is the invitation and opportunity to share our stories. In and through the eyes of others we see ourselves as God sees us. In conversation we connect or re-connect with our most deeply held values, make inspiring and meaningful sense of all of God’s clues around us, and honor and respond to our evolving and ever-changing calling to an authentic life. Why am I here? It’s the big question of every life. Come explore it with us.

Sam Portaro was ordained in the Diocese of Western North Carolina and began his ministry as Vicar of Church of the Epiphany in Newton NC.
Throughout our lives we are discerning our vocations, whether we’re aware of it or not. Intentional conversation is often essential to move forward, thus we turn to friends, mentors, and guidance professionals when the need arises. How can we, as individuals and as congregations, become more intentional in engaging vocational conversation and being resources to one another in discerning the work we are meant to do, the lives we are created to live?

This offering, free of charge, is for anyone who wants to be more intentional about seeing what we do as ministry.

10 AM – 3 PM • $35, includes lunch
Facilitator: The Rt. Rev. G. Porter Taylor

This program day will look at the ways in which the story of the Holy Grail is archetypal for our Christian journey. The Grail legend has captured the Christian imagination at least since the 12th Century. It appears in countless versions from Tennyson to Monty Python because at its core is the mystery of our common quest as faithful pilgrims. The day will look at how this legend can inform our lives in the 21st Century. The format will be presentations, small group discussions, and plenary.

The Church needs to see campus ministry and young adult ministry as the most important evangelism and mission area there is. It is where our culture is the most dynamic, most committed, most culturally diverse. —The Episcopal Church

The Young Adult Vocation Project is designed to generate new models of ministry with college students and young adults ages 18–30. The Episcopal Church, our Diocesan Strategic Plan and the College and Young Adult Commission have set challenging mission priorities and goals. These goals call us to a new focus and to new ways of doing ministry as we engage the next generation of spiritual leaders.

Research across denominational lines asks us to wake up to a movement that is happening among young adults—a yearning for a faith to believe in and live for. The spiritual vision of young adults invites us to engage, to listen, and to risk. This generation is more focused on action than on statements of faith, insisting that church be more than a place we go together. Church must be something we do together.

Students on mission in Rio Verde, Brazil—Church must be something we do together

The Episcopal Church has made important strides toward inclusion of its children and adolescents in liturgy and decision-making – in some cases, granting attendance and voice at vestry meetings and diocesan conventions. Now young adults, these people are ready to invite those older than themselves to a shared journey and mutual exchange of gifts. The Young Adult Vocation Project engages young and old(er) to move from intergenerational tolerance to intergenerational reconciliation and shared ministry.

Our diocese has historic commitments to vocation care and leadership development. These traditions are coming alive by means of the Brother Skiles Internships, through communities of young adults brought together by the Moveable Feasts initiative, and through vocation-centered programs yet to be created.

The Project Steering Committee believes that a focus on vocational discernment for young adults in contexts throughout our diocese will serve as a catalyst for a deeper exploration of call and faithful response in action for the baptized of all ages.

Please join us for a book discussion and signing of If There’s Anything I Can Do.

The book serves as a guide for friends and loved ones of caretakers and patients—an audience that broadens all the time as we all get news all too often that someone we know and love has cancer or a serious illness.

The book is born of Hicks’ own experience as a caregiver for her partner during almost four years with pancreatic cancer. With poignant humor and gentle honesty, Hicks has turned her experience into a real-world guidebook for everyone who has ever wondered how to help and what to say during the universal experience of navigating disease.

Copies can be purchased at Accent on Books, 854 Merrimon Avenue, online at www.AnythingiCanDoBook.com, or at the event.

Daughter and spouse of Episcopal priests, she is active in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. Following her partner’s death from cancer, she founded Spell the End of Cancer, a Scrabble event to raise money for cancer research.
