The Brother Skiles Internships

Now a first-year student at Duke Divinity School, Caroline Oxford was the first Brother Skiles intern

We do not seek to follow in the footsteps of those of old. We seek the things they sought. —adapted from the poet Matsuo Basho

We can’t talk about this project without talking about Brother Skiles. William West Skiles, 19th century deacon and missionary, belonged to a small monastic community located in Valle Crucis. A patron saint of this region, he was declared a “holy man” by the recent General Convention. Notably, Brother Skiles helped provide oversight for a school dedicated to preparing young ministers for service. The historic religious community of which Skiles was a part practiced discernment and study in preparation for faithful service. The Young Adult Vocation Project makes a connection between his life’s work then and ours today. Brother Skiles’ witness inspires and energizes this exciting new program. Beginning in 2011 we anticipate sponsoring campus ministry interns in both summer and academic year programs.

Interns will engage discernment-related tools and experiences; receive training in peer ministry; attend Vocaré gatherings; and become sensitized to social justice concerns. A modest stipend will be provided along with the support of a mentor and small group.
